![]() Virtual Orchestra Online How To Tune TheirAs the orchestra director for the West Allis-West Milwaukee school district, Michels is also planning to use her successes from the summer as a model for other teachers and students.I can tell in my voice, Im more hoarse because Im talking them through stuff and singing to them, Michels said.The younger ones who maybe didnt know how to tune their instruments confidently by themselves, that was, you know, could have been an ordeal, Michels laughed.Here I am, talking them through turning a peg and they say Its going to break, and I say No its not going to break.Michels is getting plenty of help from students as well.Weve done a lot of review.The neat thing about having them one-on-one and not having them in orchestra is that we kind of focus on solo repertoire, we focus on technique, Michels said.Alex Kunda, a junior at Nathan Hale High School, is a gifted musician who is working to keep up with her skills on violin, viola and cello. Along with taking virtual lessons all summer, Kunda has also been helping Michels and her fellow classmates by recording multiple parts of a song and looping them together into a video. Her peers can all play along as if they are in the band room together. It gives them the opportunity to play their part while also hearing every other part, Kunda said. Everything, especially cello lessons, everything has been described out more, giving me more of how this should feel or how this should sound, Kunda said. I think my progress slowed down quite a bit at first because I learn more visually, so I can see everything, but it was a little more difficult without having to hear everything. Michels and Kunda said its a work in progress, but if they can figure out the kinks, they will use their model for the upcoming school year. As one of the students said last night, I dont want to be submitting a scale quiz every week as my orchestra grade.
